Few films are made at this level with this kind of message and I cannot recommend that you see it enough. The acting, the atmosphere and the themes are enough to merit a trip to the theater in and of themselves, but viewing these in context of the greater picture adds so much more. Sitting in that theater, knowing that we are the continuance of a new chapter in Soraya's story is a once-in-a-decade experience. Taking this into account, you might say that The Stoning of Soraya M. is the most uplifting film of the year. This is a must-see for anyone and everyone. Before I saw the movie, I prepared myself for the violence. I knew that it would have a sad ending. This movie is touching. It moves you and it gently brings you to a reality that is rarely seen in our faded eyes. This is one of the movies that are based on true reality, the reality that women still face today which is beyond my imagination.
At the same time, I am a woman living in the United States and sometimes I even feel like my voice is not being heard. I value and admire the strength of the quiet, strong, hardworking woman who never complains about her life. She lives with dignity. Was this review helpful? It takes the exposure of the death of an innocent woman to strike fear in the hearts of the men who persecuted her. It's their own fear of being found out, not the remorse for the sinful crime they've committed, that makes a few of them reevaluate what they've done. There are moments in the film where the characters can hault the stoning of Soraya but they choose not to. It is not just Soraya's death but the men's choice to do evil when they could do good that incites anger into the viewer. It is scary to know that there are cultures who still practice injustice in the name of their God and of their self-made laws.
Definitely see this film. It is culturally significant and incredibly important given what is going on in Iran today. Instead of turning away from what we know if going on, turn towards the heartbreaking performances of the actors who deserve oscars for their roles in this film. Was this review helpful? Throughout the films brutal title scene I just wanted to jump in the screen and save her from this horrible injustice. But was destroyed by the fact that I couldn't, that this happens everyday. The movie is deeply touching with two very hard to watch scenes in which Soraya M is assaulted by the men in her village. While you want to turn away, it's impossible to shut your eyes to the abusive reality that is taking place on screen. Soraya tries to keep her dignity even while her own father, husband and sons throw stones at her. You walk away from this film with a sincere appreciation for the basic human rights you easily have in the United States, and you desire to stand up against the injustice that oppresses women in far away countries.
