But for someone who has traveled that road the movie was an awakening that not all is lost in the intensity of the pain there is always a redeeming moment. If you've ever experienced something as hideious as incest, abuse and being overweight my heart goes out to you. There are more of us out there than most people realize and any one of us can testify to the havoc it brings on to your pyscy and your self-esteem. I sincerely believe that Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe not only did a superb job, they are, as far as I'm concerned, the only ones who should even be nominated this year! Was this review helpful? MoNique and Gabby were outstanding actresscess. They both deserve every award presented for best actress and best supporting actress. Congratulations MoNique for your Golden Globe win. Precious had both drama and humor (especially the scene where the male nurse tries to hit own the gay teacher).
I would like to see a part 2 to this movie, and played in more theaters next time. Was this review helpful? The teacher part and alternative school is what I had to do to succeed and it worked I'm a 28 year old mother now with of 2 adorable boys. Have a house of my own, that I OWN a great job, and I owe it all to my alternative teacher. She changed my life. My situation was not nearly as bad as what is in the movie, but anyone given a second chance can make it work if they want it!!!! and I did and think to myself that that's how the movie will end in my head anyways... :))) Was this review helpful? Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/30/2009A review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire by Tototopotomoy3333 It's hard to imagine that a mother could treat her child in the way Precious was treated and to stand by & know that she was being abused by her boyfriend (Precious' father) was unthinkable. You know that there are so many children who live with situations like this (black & white) and it's heart breaking to know it goes on. I wish the ending had been different. To just see Precious walking away with her 2 children and hoping & praying that she was going to make it and everything would turn out right for her but not knowing for sure what was in store for her. MoNique was wonderful as her mom and even Mirah Carey did a good job as the social worker. Her teacher at the special school was touching also. A good movie but wouldn't want to see it if you were depressed during the holidays. Was this review helpful? It was phenomenal!!! I encourage every person of every race and color to see this film. Other than my party of eight, everyone else in the theatre was African-American. I was surprised not to see any other white people in attendance at that particular show.
There are many messages here, and I am very fortunate to know producer/director Lee Daniels. He is such a talented, thoughtful and thought-provoking producer and director. His topics are those that most want to turns their heads away from. However, abuse is out there; incest is out there; HIV is out there; obsesity is out there; taunting is out there...but so is hope. Lee did a terrific job of pulling together a very talented crew, including jewel newcomer Gabby Sidiibe, to create one of the best movies made. Lee's ability to pull together images, history and music to create the message of this movie is unmatched.
"Precious" has received rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered, as well as the Toronto International Film Festival. The many reviews about "Precious" are outstanding, and for just reason. This is a must-see movie! For many, this movie is full of uncomfortable topics and images - easier to ignore than acknowledge - but I encourage you to take your blinders off and see "Precious." You won't be disappointed! The language was horrible as it is in real life but I hate the GD,MF stuff that was said over and over again . I realize it is part of real life but I also know that is a choice and I hate that people were bringing young girls under 12 . It is not a movie for kids. The point of the movie was sad but true to life. Monique was fab as was Gabby! Was this review helpful? If you submit feedback on this review in the future, we will overwrite your previous feedback. Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/22/2009A review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire by sixcent9 For this movie to be such a huge hit, why isn't it in more theaters??? I'm from South Bend, IN - a relatively medium size city. Why won't they bring it here. This frustrates me very much that certain movies won't show in this conservative state! Can someone tell me where is the nearest theater playing this film? And who can I speak with or write to get it to come here? Was this review helpful? This movie is not about a black girl in a poor neighborhood, it's about seeing what good can be done. Gabby Sidhe performed well as Precious, and I credit Lee Daniels for setting her up to succeed. The cinemaphotography was brutally honest, with no holding back what Precious was dealing with. The remainder of the supporting cast performed well, and oh Mariah Carey- I thought you weren't capable to play a homely looking girl. Try some more roles like that and maybe we can all forget about Glitter.
My sole complaint is that the true antagonist(Precious' father) didn't get enough time for everyone to hate on him. But that said, this movie was well worth traveling out of my way to see- and any young girl MUST SEE THIS. Was this review helpful? I understand how a person could be depressed after those events & eat to morbid obesity, but that was a novel. Gabie doesn't have that excuse.
Gabie should get to a healthy weight by healthy means and show her fans they can do it too. Was this review helpful? Sign in 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 11/20/2009A review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire by YDC2011 Precious is the kind of film that rocks you to your soul. Most movies are entertaining. There is nothing entertaining about this film. The dark tale of Precious is unnerving. I almost walked out on three different occasions. It is hard to believe one innocent child could be put through so much torture. Mo'Nique was incredible. Kravitiz was unrecognizable to me.But of course he was still "fine". The most uplifting part of the film is no matter what is thrown Precious' way, she is not fazed. She just pushed through. No one gets her down. She lives in an imaginary world where she is a princess and has a handsome prince by her side. I do recommend the film, but not if you are already in a low mood because you will leave feeling much worse. I did.
