A lot of movies had disappointed me after I saw the famed and beautifully well done "Avatar", but this movie had deep meaning to it. Friendship, trust, and understanding of the different minds.
Key points a child should definitely look into and understand. It definitely goes with the saying, "Don't judge a book by it's cover until you read it."
I will say that dreamworks have rated this movie very well, there are some innuendos that only adults would get but they aren't very vulgar at all, but that's fine because it's a perfect family movie, it's humourous and enjoyable for all ages.
The action scenes keep you on your toes and the overall adorable growing friendship of Toothless the Night Fury and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III son of the chief of the Vikings; Stoick the Vast.
The soundtrack of this film, composed by John Powell, is absolutely superb. It brings out the mood of the scenes and it fits perfectly with the age of the vikings. I have many a moments where I wanted to start crying because the emotion of the music and what was going on overwhelmed me. It is beautiful.

We went to see this movie in IMAX 3D Saturday night and it was excellent! I would probably go see it again if I was given the option. How to Train Your Dragon was cute, funny, action packed. All around it was really good. There was a twist at the end that I didn't expect but it was still great. The dragon in this movie reminded me first of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, then of my boyfriends cat. It was well worth the money to go see this movie and any family would enjoy it or any couple that is in touch with their child side. Was this review helpful? To be honest, I didn't even know what I was even going to watch. Hence, as I got into the cinema, I learned that the movie is about a loser type of kid ('Hiccup'), whose father expects him to be a grand dragon slayer... like any other Viking had been for generations. But as a sacrilege, he ended up making friends with a black handicapped dragon ('Toothless')... and with other dragons as well. This ended up causing him to question the general Viking understanding of how wild or friendly dragons generally are. I actually enjoyed those moments of the film, which I thought were executed well. It even made Hiccup become the new kid of the block, finally for the others to hang with. On the other hand, the jealous girl ('Astrid') ended up disliking Hiccup to the point when she accidentally discovers Toothless... who ended up disciplining her for trying to tell the other Vikings about it. The part of the film I liked is when, eventually, the part of three discovered the volcano where a mean giant dragon dwells. The parts I also liked were when Hiccup got busted with his dad during his exam, got encouragement from Astrid to save Toothless, and the whole mess the giant dragon brought to the curious fleet of dragon slayers. You must also enjoy the part when Hiccup, Astrid and the classmates got out the dragons from school, and use them in bringing the giant down to earth. But what’s totally messed up was the part when Hiccup learns that he lost a foot. I guess it might be some sort of a battle scar worth having… I think. Anyway, the ending was done well. Toothless is spared, and becomes Hiccup’s pet indefinitely, the Vikings now like dragons instead of slaying them naively, and Hiccup and Astrid are closer together… too close. And, ultimately, Hiccup and his dad get along well, with respect to the whole dragon ordeal. This film was done well, that I thought it was something being done by Disney… even better than “Shrek”. So I didn’t have much hope to it. Went to watch it in IMAX 3D coz Im taking my nephews…. GOSH wasn’t I wrong!!!! The movie was entertaining from the time the Dreamworks intro to the very end!!! Was hilarious even when the characters were o so serious. Very nice story line even tho the animation cannot be in par with the Nemos, Cars and the Walles. But overall it was an awesome movie!! Its entertainment in a very different way than all other animation movies thus far!! A must see!! Was this review helpful? I was so surprised at how good the movie turned out to be. I fell in love with every character, especially Toothless. (He reminded me of my black cat, Binx.) The movie was a good balance between action, comedy, and even romance that I think most people will enjoy the movie. I've yet to meet one person who didn't like it. While I do agree that some scenes might be a bit much for younger children, I think ultimately it depends on the child and what they can handle. In a sense this is like a children's version of Avatar. Definitely a movie I would pay to see again. And definitely one I will buy when it comes out on DVD. Was this review helpful? The 3D effects were amazing and at times I caught both boys trying to "touch" something that came at them. My only complaint lies in the fit of the 3D glasses for the kiddos! It would be nice if they would make them in a child sized version. Neither were scared at any point in the movie...I would pay the extra money to do it in 3D, can't imagine seeing it any other way! Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 4/5/2010A review of How to Train Your Dragon by MyNameGoesHere1 Big props for HTTYD. I saw the 3D IMAX version and it was worth every penny. In many ways, HTTYD was a better made, more intelligent story than Avatar, and I liked that film. It even snuck past my 18-year-old’s cynical defenses. The 3D effects didn’t feel gimmicky and at times, caught my breath. The voice work of Jay Baruchel and Gerard Butler is superb. Toothless is a hoot – he so reminds me of my own little night fury, a black cat named Birdie who brings me “presents” of dead birds. I guess every professional reviewer has to find something to harp about, but Mary Pols, how do you expect a movie about Vikings and dragons to NOT involve battle scenes? I guess this could have been a two hour teddy bear picnic, but who wants to see that? Was this review helpful? I even asked them if it was scary and both stated it was not. My daughter and son both really like the black dragon. They thought the black dragon was cute. I thought the movie was a very mild PG movie considering what else is out there. It had a good story line, good message and the ending was very positive.
I feel the only reason why people are making a big deal about it being scary is that critic here on msn made a big deal about it. The movie is no more than The Incredibles. They even made the dagons in the movie cute looking which i think was done on purpsoe to make it not so scary for little children. Was this review helpful? Unfortunately, it was too much violence for my 4 year old granddaughter, my 7 year old grandson, and my 3 year old great niece. My 3 year old niece saw the advertising picture at the theatre and insisted on seeing it. The girls said they didn't like the movie shortly after it started and my grandson has a very sensitive side and was worried about having a nightmare. He didn't have nightmares. He thought it was a very sad movie We talked extensively about it on the ride home. Grandpa thought the movie was good. Was this review helpful? The move is entertaining. The end result of the last action sequence caused a mentally tussle for the kids and some necessary conversation, but overall we had a blast watching the movie and our enjoyed children’s real-time response to it. I highly recommend it. Was this review helpful? If you submit feedback on this review in the future, we will overwrite your previous feedback. Sign in | ||
